This is another one of those hidden historical jewels that I had never visited until this summer, even though it's just over an hour from my home. Established on the banks of the Red River in 1858, before North Dakota became a state, Fort Ambercrombie was later moved to the current site to avoid the flooding that occurred along the banks of the river. The site is presently managed as a North Dakota historical site with an interpretive center, marked original building sites, reproductions of several period buildings and one building that's comprised largely of pieces from one of the original structures. For more information about the Fort Abercrombie site and its activities, you can visit the State Historical Society of North Dakota website page here.
